SCAC Code
A SCAC (Standard Carrier Alpha Code) is a unique two-to-four-letter code that identifies a transportation carrier on bills of lading, EDI messages, and shipping documents.
The Standard Carrier Alpha Code is a short alphabetic code, assigned by the NMFTA, that uniquely identifies a carrier. It appears on bills of lading, in EDI transactions, and across routing and tracking systems as an unambiguous carrier reference.
SCACs are essential for automation: they let shippers, brokers, and software route a shipment to the correct carrier and match tracking, invoicing, and documents without relying on carrier names, which are easily mistyped or duplicated.
