Freight density is a shipment’s weight divided by its volume in pounds per cubic foot — the primary factor that determines its LTL freight class.

Density measures how much a shipment weighs relative to the space it occupies, expressed in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³). To calculate it, multiply length × width × height in inches, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then divide the weight by that volume.
For example, a 48 × 40 × 48 inch pallet weighing 500 pounds occupies 53.3 cubic feet, giving a density of about 9.4 lb/ft³ — which classifies as class 92.5.
Higher density generally means a lower freight class and a lower cost, because dense freight uses trailer space efficiently. Shippers can sometimes lower their class (and price) by packaging freight more compactly. Accurate dimensions and weight are essential; understating either invites a reweigh or reclassification after pickup.
